The LEAF community collaborative sponsors and supports area Mental Health First Aid courses.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help offered to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate treatment and support are received or until the crisis resolves.
MHFA is an 8-hour certification course to help communities better understand mental illness and respond to psychiatric emergencies. It is an in-person training that teaches you how to help people developing a mental illness or in a crisis.
Certified MHFA instructors lead the course and teach:
• Impact of mental and substance use disorders
• Signs of addictions and mental illnesses
• 5-step action plan to assess a situation and help
• Local resources and where to turn for help
